Eraserheads guitarist Marcus Adoro: A life away from trappings of rock n’ roll

If you lived through the ‘90s, it's impossible to look back without thinking of the phenomenal band of the decade, the Eraserheads.

For the uninitiated, the band—composed of Ely Buendia (vocals and guitars), Buddy Zabala (bass), Marcus Adoro (lead guitars), and Raimund Marasigan (drums)helped tremendously in ushering alternative music to mainstream audiences, consequently toppling the balladeers in chart rankings.

Some of the Eraserheads' well-loved songs are now videoke staples: "Ligaya," "Pare Ko," "Toyang," "Magasin," "Alapaap," "With a Smile," "Torpedo," and "Huling El Bimbo," among many others. After releasing 10 successful albums and numerous hit singles, the band called it quits when chief songwriter Ely Buendia left in 2002 amidst reports of bitter tension and animosity.

The three remaining members decided to continue and changed their name to Cambio, signifying a new beginning. But even as the newly named band was busily trying to regain its former following, guitarist Marcus Adoro bid goodbye to lead a normal life away from the chaotic world of the rock n' roll.

CALL OF THE SEA. "Tinawag ako ng dagat," Marcus said to Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) in an interview late last month.

Marcus, known to the fans as the punk-yet-quiet Eraserhead, retreated to the waters of La Union and settled there—completely abandoning the city and the noisy life he used to have here in Manila.

"I got bitten by the surfing bug," he added, referring to his long-standing hobby, which dates back to his popular band days.

Though he denies having felt burned out, Marcus admits he got tired of the rock n' roll lifestyle and of that never-ending question about the demise of the most influential band of the nineties, or perhaps of all time.

"Hindi naman nakakasawa o nakaka-burn-out ang paggawa ng music. It's the lifestyle and everything that goes into it that sucks your soul. ‘Tsaka that time, lahat na ng tao sa bars pareho lang ang tanong [Eraserheads breakup]," lamented Marcus.

He revealed that he's always been fond of surfing and the beach which he thinks is part of his background.

"As of mid ‘90s, may nagsabi na sa akin na may surfing culture na sa ‘Pinas at isa ang La Union sa mga lugar na yun. When Dong [of another rock group, Yano] came out of his cosmic sleep [depression], I treated him to a road trip up North. We ended up in the surfing place in La Union by accident. So dun ko nakita. I took it as a sign. ‘Tsaka para na ring homecoming sa akin ‘yun kasi Mama grew up in the next town, so it's also a back- to-my-roots thing for me."

Unknown to many, it takes a lot of discipline and self control to be a surfer—a complete turnaround from the usual zombie-like routine of a musician.

"I was there as a surfer. ‘Pag surfer ka, kailangan mo matulog ng maaga, para magising ka ng maaga, Hindi ka pwedeng mag-surf nang lasing o puyat. Kase ‘pag may nangyari sa ‘yo dun, wala kang ibang sisisihin. May sariling kultura ang surfers, natutunan ko at na-experience ‘yun. Gusto ko ‘yung nasa beach, ‘tapos may sunset everyday. I enjoyed more than a thousand of those. I had the luxury of choosing my food, my diet because I also enjoy cooking. Wala akong cable or telephone, but I had DVDs and my CDs.

"Yup, mas na-enjoy ko ‘yong sinasabi mong ‘simple' kasi naranasan ko ‘yung hindi simple. ‘Yun naman yata ang gusto ng lahat, but then most of the time, the simplest thing is usually the hardest to do. Kunyari maging good boy," he said with a grin, when asked if he enjoyed living a simpler life for six years while in La Union.

SURFING BACK TO MANILA. While in La Union, Marcus didn't exactly hang his guitar. The only difference is that he indulges in music only to enjoy it, as opposed to when he had to strum to make a living.

Marcus didn't become entirely quiet. In fact, some new songs and even videos coming from him sporadically found its way into Manila, though they're mostly catering to the underground market. He uses an alias to hide his real identity.

But staying six years in hibernation, away from the spotlight, brought a wealth of new materials he feels worth sharing with the public. Thus, Marcus can now be occasionally spotted doing some gigs around Manila with the band called Markus Highway.

He describes his present music as "organic" Pinoy rock—"a potpourri of local folk, pop, country, reggae and punk." And definitely, it's something he'd love to formally record in the immediate future.

"Pinoy s'ya," he explicated about his music. "Nakatingin ako sa roots ng Pinoy as opposed to looking for inspiration elsewhere."

In La Union, Marcus is noticeably at peace and contented despite living a more serene un-rock star kind of existence. Looking back, Marcus said that he never regretted anything, and he likened the success of Eraserheads to an exciting journey that inevitably had to end.

Eraserheads reunion concert deserves big-screen run.(Entertainment)

While it is reported that more than 50,000 people were present when Eraserheads reunited on stage last August, still, so many of the band's die-hard fans missed the show for whatever reason.

Thus it's fitting that such a historic event be relived on the big screen and give those not around a chance to experience something that might won't happen again.

"Eraserheads: The Reunion Concert" just opened in theaters last November 26, ensuring that anyone who wishes to see or repeat the whole concert will be accommodated - all in the comforts of a movie theater and its surround sound.

"Masayang-masaya kami at nandito magkakasama ulit tayo," expressed the group's heart and soul Ely Buendia during the premiere held at Megamall just a few days back. He was around with lead guitarist Marcus Adoro to open the screening which also featured two short films ("Waiting Shed" and "The Artist Is In") which he and the latter directed, respectively.

Ely, who was ill during the August 30 gig and was rushed to the hospital after first set, was in his more jolly mood and cared enough to joke, "Ako siyempre mas excited kasi first time ko mapapanood yung concert," he told the amused theater crowd, also comprising of true-blue Eheads fans present that memorable night.

Peppered with graphics embellishments that make it more visually enticing on the big screen, the concert has likewise been released by Sony BMG in CD form, easily becoming the first record done by the group since "Carbon Stereoxide", their last album before Ely broke away from the group in 2002.

Bassist Buddy Zabala was also around inside the cinema. So only drummer Raymund Marasigan whose unconfirmed hush-hush riff with Ely is arguably what's keeping the band from truly reuniting was reportedly absent.

As for the reunion concert, had it not been revealed that the 'Heads have prepared a 30-song line-up, the 15 songs they did live were quite enough even for a major concert standard. Of 15, they delivered mostly familiar hits such as "Alapaap," (a right pick opening song for its inviting tone), "Ligaya," "Harana," "Kailan," "Fruitcake," "Huwag Kang Matakot," "Huwag Mo Nang Itanong," "Toyang," "Shake Yer Head," "Kaliwete" and "With A Smile."

Not expected on the list were "Kama Sutra", "Hey Jay" and the less-known "Light Years", off their Christmas album "Fruitcake" which turned out to be their surprising last song in light of the trouble that happened to the night's main man.

The Eraserheads, their united stance alone a sweet journey back to their heydeys, did a good show and proved that paying them each "millions" was worth every cent. The thrilling digital countdown to show proper and appropriate fireworks at the beginning of the set paved the way for a smooth stretch.

Feeling very sick because of the pressure and his mom Lizette Buendia's passing, Ely's act was a gallant effort deserving of high praises.

It was obvious he was fascinated by the big crowd that went to see them. He simply mused, "Dami tao a." Yet the feeling of gratitude was there. That moment he must have realized how Eraserheads have been missed by its multitude of fans. And how, with the chant of 'group hug' reverberating after every song, these people want them to get back and possibly continue making good music together. Whether there will be a follow-up gig or a reunion studio album can only be just everybody's hope.

The historic Eraserheads reunion concert hits movie theaters beginning Nov. 26.(Scuttlebutt)

We were there right where it happened, euphoric and expectant all the way, and there is no way we will miss this chance to relive every moment of it.It shall go down local music history as that singular moment where four estranged band members -- Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala, and Marcus Adoro -- came together for one spectacular reunion-- 08.30.08. One band. One great show. One night only.
The historic performance of the country's biggest band in the 90s that drew in more than 50,000 people at The Fort Bonifacio Open Field last August 30, will be shown in movie theaters starting November 26 simultaneously in Metro Manila and Cebu City.
Eraserheads is again about to make history as the only OPM band to immortalize their performance on the big screen, a feat never before achieved by any local band or artist. The soundtrack of the film, brought to us by Sony BMG Music Entertainment, is already available at all record outlets nationwide.

Presented by Smart Buddy and supported by Sony Ericsson, "Eraserheads: The Reunion Concert," on the big screen, will relive the glorious moments of August 30, starting with the countdown to signal the beginning of the show, until it was unexpectedly cut short due to Ely's failing health. The band failed to come back on stage after the 15-minute intermission preceding the first set after Ely was rushed to the hospital for extreme chest pains.

It will be remembered that Ely was under a lot of pressure at the time of the concert's staging. His Mom Lizette Buendia passed away two days before the show.

The concert reunion was replete with drama -- starting with the events leading to the fab four's agreement to do the show together, to the controversial and volatile position the company which bankrolled the production was placed after all the protests made by the Department of Health. Sony BMG and Francis Lumen's company saved the day and the show culminated with the biggest drama of all--the abrupt conclusion of the concert halfway through in a life-and-death situation that made everyone prayerful, sober and thankful.

But given all that transpired, "Eraserheads: Reunion Concert" boasts of outstanding production value. The state-of-the-art sounds, lights, and stage reportedly caused a whopping P40-million pesos to build. The audience that night were so thrilled to find themselves drowned out by the outstanding display of lights and fireworks. It was truly a magnificent event, to say the least.
All these, plus the thousands of adoring fans caught on camera, will be relived all over again in "Eraserheads: The Concert Reunion" on the big screen starting November 26 at your favorite movie houses. Just don't fail to catch it!

‘I’m still the No. 1 Eraserheads fan’ – Rico B.

The supposed rivalry between local songwriting greats Rico Blanco and Ely Buendia boils down to one being a big fan of the other. This was the message implied by former Rivermaya frontman Rico Blanco who expressed he has none of that “top Ely” thinking and after all he is a mere fan of the defunct Eraserheads which Buendia led back in the 90s.

“I’m still the number one Eraserheads fan. And that’s the truth,” Blanco recently told the entertainment media during
a night at Capones in Makati where he promoted his newest single “Ayuz Na.”
When asked if he is kind of monitoring Buendia’s progress as a tunesmith to somewhat measure his own output’s growth, he pointed out, “It’s not like that in music (referring to the unspoken competition). You just do your own stuff and be happy with it.” The two are no doubt the most prolific and successful rock songwriters of the current generation, having propelled their respective former groups to iconic status.

Blanco, now on his fourth single as a soloist, was chief songwriter for Rivermaya from the ealry 90s up until he decided to leave and go solo. Now Pupil frontman Buendia solely wrote most of the classic Eraserheads singles and album tracks.

During a recent guesting at a Channel V event, Blanco, alone and focused, was seen watching from a distance as Pupil performed. He recalled, though, that he was also similarly concentrated observing the other performers.

Most quarters have concluded that instead of backsliding, he remains a hitmaker minus Rivermaya, with his first three singles all certified chart-busters. “Yugto” reintroduced him to audiences in groundbreaking nature. Album title “Your Universe” proved he’s still capable of writing intelligent English ditties while “Antukin,” known for being that unheralded track pushed into a single, assured fans that his songwriting’s strong pop sense has not deserted him yet.

Initially not given much importance (far from that of “Yugto” which boasts complicated arrangement and employed numerous people in its recording), “Antukin” is actually a brilliant record with Rico doing everything: Guitars, bass, drums, piano and vocals. Another “just Rico” number “Para Hindi Ka Mawala” has likewise a similar potential if given enough airplay.

“Marami pang bala ‘yung ‘mama,’” Warner Music’s Jim Baluyut mused, surely noting the many heavyweight tracks in the 10-song all-Blanco original “Your Universe” album.

The new radio cut “Ayuz,” with a music video featuring a dancing Rico partnered with current “Crush Ng Bayan” Cristine Reyes, takes a connection (in a feel-good mood) from the piece “Bangon” which Blanco wrote as a contribution for hope in the midst of devastating typhoons that hit Luzon this year.

The Eraserheads Final Set DVD Update

FYI the audio CD of The Eraserheads Final Set will be out April 27. And that’s good news!
For the past few weeks I noticed most of my search engine traffic’s query includes inquiry about the release date of the Eraserheads Final Set DVD. As much as most fans want to know and as much as I want to share what I know, the thing is I don’t know anything. But right now I think I can share something.

After that disappointing TV airing of the concert over GMA7 some weeks ago many fans got even more excited for the DVD. GMA7 wasn’t able to air the entire concert because of course they only have 2 hours of air time while the concert took for more than 2 hours. 8 songs or almost 1 set weren’t able to watch by fans on TV plus a bunch of commercials were also aired. For me this is understandable as GMA7 is just doing its part as a network company. We should actually be thankful for them for airing the concert even after just a month of the event and fans that weren’t able to attend the concert had the chance to see it on TV.
But is there really a DVD to be released? Find out what Ereserheads front man Ely Buendia has to say.

“RE DVD, CD lalabas siguro yun this month. i’ll be meeting with sony for other projects soon, so tanong ko na rin sila. i’m also excited to hear and see it, cos i think we played a good set, and i’m partly responsible for the flow of the show  plus, more royalties!  hehe”
“actually, levan pretty much drew a very good, if not precise picture of what the boxed set will contain. give or take a few rarities. details are sketchy, but i will say that sony and i want to make sure na this will be the ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPION.”

This statement was taken from Pupils’ forum posted by Ely himself.

Levan is the guy who manages Schizo Archives a website dedicated to Eraserheads which also contains old footage of Eraserheads, articles and lots and lots of useful information. He is a member of the Eraserheads mailing list and is currently a very active member of the group. I can’t find his post about the boxed set but I think he hopes to include all albums of the band in it. I think his prediction, as Ely said, will most likely come true.
